You're doing marketing activity — posting, promoting, investing time and money — but something isn't clicking.

The problem usually isn't effort. It's the lack of a structured plan behind the activity. And it's more common than you think — around two thirds of UK small businesses have no marketing plan. Plan4 exists to change that.

Over 15 years, I've worked in marketing across larger organisations and directly with small businesses. I've seen firsthand the difference a proper marketing plan makes.

But here's what struck me most: larger organisations have the luxury of time and resource for marketing planning. They can run away days, conduct market research, build strategy. Small business owners? They're often flying solo or with small teams, doing everything themselves, with no days to step back and plan.

I've watched small businesses skip the fundamentals — understanding their market, analysing their customers, setting clear objectives. Instead, they jump straight to doing. They post, they promote, they create content. But without a plan behind it, so much effort and money gets wasted.

They don't research their audience because it feels time-consuming and costly. They don't define their strategy because there's no clarity on what they're actually trying to achieve. Are they growing their audience? Deepening existing relationships? Going after new business?

Without that clarity, implementation — no matter how tactical or clever — rarely delivers real results.

Then came AI. Market research, content creation, planning support — tools that were once expensive and time-intensive are now accessible to small businesses. But most don't know how to use them strategically. The overwhelm remains.

That's why I created Plan4. The four-step framework™ — Analyse, Plan, Implement, Review — breaks marketing planning into something manageable and simple. It brings strategic thinking within reach of every small business owner.

From my experience, businesses grow when they think strategically and have a proper plan. Plan4 exists to make that accessible.
